What is Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP)?

Super Absorbent Polymers (SAPs) are crosslinked hydrophilic polymer networks capable of absorbing and retaining enormous quantities of water relative to their own mass — without dissolving. The most common SAP chemistry is crosslinked polyacrylate (sodium polyacrylate), which works through osmotic pressure and hydrogen bonding to draw water molecules into the polymer network and hold them as a gel even under pressure.

SAPCEL, manufactured by Maple Biotech Pvt. Ltd., is a high-performance polyacrylate SAP produced in India and exported globally. SUJALAM Bio-SAP is Maple Biotech's biodegradable alternative — derived from natural cellulose and starch polymers — for applications where environmental degradation is important.

SAPCEL in Agriculture — Water Conservation for Arid & Semi-Arid Farming

Water scarcity is one of the defining challenges of 21st-century agriculture. SAPCEL SAP provides a proven, field-validated solution: placed in the root zone of crops, SAPCEL captures rainfall and irrigation water during wet periods and releases it slowly to plant roots during dry periods — dramatically reducing water requirements while protecting crops from drought stress.

Drip Irrigation Zones

SAPCEL in the root zone below drip emitters acts as a sub-soil reservoir, reducing irrigation frequency by 40–60% and preventing water loss to deep percolation.

Transplanting & Seedling Establishment

Root-dip application of SAPCEL slurry before transplanting dramatically improves survival rates — especially in hot, water-stressed transplanting conditions.

Dry-land & Rainfed Farming

SAPCEL placed in seed furrows captures monsoon/rainfall and extends soil moisture availability through dry spells — enabling reliable dry-land crop production.

Reforestation & Afforestation

SAPCEL in tree planting pits improves seedling survival in arid reforestation — proven in desert greening projects across the Middle East and Africa.

Greenhouse & Protected Horticulture

SAPCEL mixed into growing substrates (coco peat, perlite) in greenhouse crop production — reduces irrigation frequency and energy costs for heating.

Golf Courses & Landscaping

SAPCEL in turf soil improves drought tolerance of golf course greens, sports fields, and ornamental landscaping in water-restricted municipalities.

SAPCEL SAP — Technical FAQ

What is Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP) and how does it work?
Super Absorbent Polymer is a crosslinked polymer network that absorbs water by osmotic pressure and hydrogen bonding, swelling to form a hydrogel. SAPCEL SAP absorbs up to 400 times its own weight in pure water. In soil, the gel slowly releases water as the surrounding soil dries — acting as a moisture reservoir for plant roots. In hygiene products, SAP absorbs urine or blood and locks it away, keeping the surface dry under pressure (measured as Absorbency Under Pressure, or AUP).
How much does SAPCEL SAP reduce irrigation requirements?
Field trials in India, Middle East, and Africa show that SAPCEL SAP typically reduces irrigation frequency by 30–60% in agricultural applications. The actual saving depends on crop type, soil texture, climate (temperature, humidity, evapotranspiration), and SAP application rate. Sandy soils show the highest water savings. In arid environments like Saudi Arabia and UAE, water savings of 50–70% have been reported in date palm cultivation with SAPCEL application.
Is SAPCEL SAP safe for plants and soil?
Yes. SAPCEL polyacrylate SAP is non-toxic to plants, soil microorganisms, and the broader soil ecosystem when used at recommended rates. The polymer does not release any harmful substances during water absorption and desorption cycles. Residual monomer (acrylic acid) content is controlled to NMT 500 ppm. SUJALAM Bio-SAP is additionally biodegradable and fully compatible with organic farming standards.
What SAP specifications are required for baby diaper manufacturing?
Key specifications for diaper-grade SAP: Centrifuge Retention Capacity (CRC) ≥28 g/g in 0.9% saline; Absorbency Under Pressure (AUP at 0.3 psi) ≥22 g/g in saline; Free Swell Capacity (FSC) ≥40 g/g; Particle size 150–850 µm (D50 typically 300–500 µm); Gel strength sufficient to prevent gel blocking; Residual monomer ≤500 ppm. Maple Biotech can manufacture SAPCEL to custom CRC and AUP targets for specific hygiene product requirements.
Does Maple Biotech supply SAP for cable manufacturing?
Yes. SAPCEL is suitable for cable water-blocking applications. In fiber optic and power cables, SAPCEL powder is incorporated into SAP-coated tapes or mixed into filling compounds. When water penetrates the cable, SAPCEL swells rapidly to form a gel barrier that blocks further moisture ingress — protecting cable integrity and signal quality over the cable's lifetime.
What is the difference between SAPCEL and SUJALAM Bio-SAP?
SAPCEL is a conventional polyacrylate-based SAP with very high water absorption capacity (up to 400g/g pure water, CRC 28–35 g/g saline for hygiene grade). SUJALAM Bio-SAP is derived from natural cellulose and starch — it is biodegradable (degrades within 12 months in soil), compatible with organic farming certification, and suitable for eco-friendly hygiene products. SUJALAM has lower absorption capacity (200–250 g/g pure water) but offers significant environmental advantages.
Can Maple Biotech provide samples of SAPCEL SAP?
Yes. Free samples of SAPCEL SAP (agricultural and hygiene grades) and SUJALAM Bio-SAP (granules and powder) are available in 500 g to 5 kg quantities for evaluation.
